I'm still here!

Hey everyone! Just wanted to drop by and say I'm still here! My cake activities have been very limited these past few months because sometimes, life just happens.  I hope everyone had a great summer! I know there's still a week or two left but who knows when I'm coming back to post! Anyway please check out the gallery page for some updated photos! Ciao for now!

Happy New Year To One & All!

It's so hard playing catch up but hopefully I'll be more up to date on this site for the New Year. I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday with your loved ones because I sure did enjoyed mine. I decided not to take any sort of cake orders or cupcake orders for December for a much needed break, although I still did a lot of baking (Christmas cookies for the fam) and cooking, I'm glad I used that time to just share and spend with my family. Because,  that's what the holidays are all about for me. 
Now we're in 2015, and when you think of New Year's, it's always about new beginnings and starting fresh.

 So far my part, I want to start something new and fresh here at The Orange Apron Cakery site. I'm going to add a new section dedicated to recipes not only for cakes but other delicious desserts as well. I'm not going to promise anything, but I will definitely try to do as much as I can this year. I also will do my best to keep everything updated when it comes to my current work. 

I cannot start the year though without sending my most sincere appreciation and thanks for all the wonderful clients I had last year, both new and old. Although my cake projects are very limited because of my schedule, I appreciate all of you for thinking of me or for considering me to be part of your celebrations.  I wish you all a happy and healthy new year, and may you continue celebrating life's precious moments with cake or anything sweet really!

A Frozen Kinda Birthday!

This post is long overdue! I made this frozen cake for dear little Jeanine who celebrated her birthday Frozen style.  Last year, I had the privilege of making her a Cinderella cake for her 5th birthday. This year she gave me a tougher challenge by requesting a Frozen themed cake.  How could I say no to one of my youngest clients?  I simply obliged. As you can see my modeling and sculpting techniques are ages away from perfection, that's not my forte to say the least but I'm glad I got this challenge because otherwise I would have never attempted to model or sculpt.  It's always good to try out and learn new things especially when it comes to cake decorating, the more techniques you know the more your creative juices will flow.  I'm glad I got challenged by this cute 6 year old, I can't wait for her idea next year! I feel like I'm sweating bullets already.  Hope you enjoyed your cake Jeanine and I can't wait for your idea next year!

He or She What Will it Bee?

I never realized that I would be working with another buttercream cake, it's definitely a refreshing change from making fondant cakes most of the time.  This is one of the cakes I made a month or two ago, (Yes, I know I'm so behind on my posts...) Anyway, this cake was for a baby shower. The mother to be wanted the cake to be a gender reveal cake because the announcement will be at the shower, her theme was bumblebees with a color scheme of yellow, black and white. I thought this was a really cute idea and of course I am very honored to be doing this cake.  Although not pictured, the inside of the cake comes with a little surprise,  the filling is actually pink vanilla buttercream to help with the reveal. So if you haven't guessed it yet, yes the mother to be is having a baby girl!

It really brings me such joy that I could be part of such a happy moment, it makes the late nights really worthwhile.  I wish the mom to be and the baby girl on the way the best of everything!

Surf, Sea & Sand.....and Baby!

I love fun baby shower themes especially those that are outside the box. Most of the time the focus is solely on the baby,  which of course is nothing wrong,  but what about the mom?  I loved how the family and friends of the mom to be incorporated what she loves and enjoys best, which is the beach.  This project was very fun to make and a challenging one as well.  Since I primarily work with fondant, I had to make some adjustments while using buttercream but I think this came out fun and vibrant which sets the mood for the occasion nicely. All the best to the mom to be and the baby on the way!

Rustic Birthday Cake

I don't get to make a lot buttercream cakes because well, what can I say? It's all about the fondant nowadays.  So when my friend Ayanna requested a  cake for her 30th Birthday,  I took the opportunity to make one! She celebrated her birthday at a vineyard in Long Island, so I took that as an inspiration for my design.  I wanted to incorporate that "country chic" and "rustic" look to the cake while still keeping it very classic looking. This is actually one of my favorite cakes so far this year because I like how simple it is.   I've always been a big fan of the "less is more concept" when it comes to cake design and I'm very pleased on how this cake turned out.  All in all it was a fun day, I want to wish Ayanna many more birthdays to come!

Music and Beer

This is a very late post but I created this cake for my dad for Father's day.  My dad is a total music lover and my sisters and I always have fond memories of him singing to us.  We got our love for music from him and one of  my fondest memory of my dad is listening to him sing while in the shower, he can seriously stay there for hours without a care in the world and just sing.   I really enjoyed making this cake because it's for my dad, I'm not saying I don't enjoy any other cakes I make because I do, but part of the reason why I love what I do, is because I like to create these cakes for my family,  and I love seeing their smiles when they see what I made for them.  My dad together with my mom really provided for us and I really wanted to make him feel special. Growing up,  my dad and my mom sent us to private school from prepatory school all the way to high school and really took care of us in every possible way. They would take us to beach trips, movies, restaurants, etc.  they really made our childhood years fun and memorable.   The beer bottle which is made of rice krispy treats is homage to the company (San Miguel) that my dad worked for, for so many years.  My dad was the "boss" as his staff would call him and he spent many wonderful years with San Miguel,  so I thought it would be a nice touch to add.  When my family moved to New York, my dad had to retire early, both him and my mom sacrificed a lot,  including their thriving careers so we can have our shot here in NY and with that,  me and my sisters are forever grateful.   Love you Pa, hope you enjoyed this cake and thank you so much for everything.
